Who would expect this freakin’ 1986 Buick Century with an anemic V6 to sound like this? Its not even high pitched like a V6!
Tell anyone it’s got a V8 under the hood...They’ll surely believe you

Lol who needs a muffler.

That is the old school V6 sound, much better than the horrible modern V6 sound.

I remember you could get a 3.8 in some of those. And the 3.3 was a destroked 3.8 anyway.
I had an Iron Puke Century that caught fire. It looked identical to that one until the driver front hubcap flew off. I bought it from Goodwill for $450 in 2002.

It sounds like that because it’s a 90 degree V6. It’s an inherently unbalanced design but it gives it that distinctive sound. Most (all) modern V6’s are 60 degree units which have that signature minivan-accelerating-from-a-tollboth drone.

If GM got one thing right with those 90* V6 engines, it’s the sound.

Yep - the 3800 engined version was a hoot. The suspension was pillow-soft unless you got a T-Type, but they were awesome makeout cars!

Hold on a sec. Sorry for late reply, but i rewatched the video, and its a 2.8L, which is one of the 60° V6s. That it still sounds like a V8 is witchcraft I tell you.

Its actually a 60°, 2.8L V6. That it still sounds like a V8 is witchcraft I tell you.

Huh. No kidding. I just watched the video fully and saw the lack of a muffler. until I saw he opened the hood, I was gonna guess he was one of those people that swapped a Cadillac 4.1 V8 into it. Apparently, the mounting points for that engine and trans are identical the n-body and the w-body.

Funny, that’s what I hate most about all those old GM pushrod V6s: IMO they sound like rough, gargling-water garbage. Yuck.

Nah, The Japanese got the high strung, high revving noise right, the Italians and the Brits have the mid-range exhaust crackle down, and us ‘Murricans have the low-end grunty sound right.

For V8s, sure, but the pushrod 6s sounded like a mix between gargling water and a garbage disposal. I always laugh when people remark how they sound like a V8. Like, have you people even heard a V8 before? Sure those OHV 6s have a somewhat “throaty” idle, but past that, they sound anything but pleasant IMO, and most certainly nothing like a V8.
